Steven Eye : Solar Eye
Steven Eye is widely known as a one-man force for the arts in Tucson, USA. He is that rare breed of artist who manages to create extraordinary work while supporting other artists. His remarkable masks and sculptures are beautiful and archetypal at once. There are many reasons to visit Steven’s Solar Culture gallery, and his own work is at the top of the list.

Thanks for agreeing to talk to us about your spectacular visionary sculpture. Can you tell us where they came from.
Steven Eye
In 1985 I moved to Tucson, Arizona from Philadelphia, and shortly after that I started a series of sculptures
I called “Women Spiritual Warriors”, at that time I didn’t know about the history of Goddess culture or Patriarchy.
As an art student at the Phila College of Art from 1975 -19 79 I was a Punk rock / skater / Futurist inspired / spiritual devotee there was no use for most of art history in our scene – the street was our life blood. Tucson changed all that and made me connect with the Earth, and the history of this planet and it’s people
that is when I started to feel the need to do these sculptures to empower women – these sculptures were my devotional works of love.

I was the only spiritual seeker in our Punk rock/skater scene in the art world that I knew in Phila. and now in Tucson I never found a place for my work to fit in. It wasn’t fantasy, sci fi, neo classical, or contemporary,
so I started my own gallery in an old warehouse in Tucson in 1987 right before the Harmonic Convergence
and have been here ever since….
Now, with great hope and awe there seems to be a whole movement going on called, Visionary Art
more and more of us are connecting more and more…..

Hello Steven. I am moved by your masks and sculture. I often operate by intuition and feel compelled to contact you. I read that you help other artists. I was intruigued because I am also from Philadelphia, dreaming of getting my painting exposed and moving to a warm climate in the West. I was also intrigued because your interview mentioned 1975, the year I was born. I feel like our art is similar because it combines intricately detailed realism with fantastic, surrealistic vision. I would love to share my work with you and correspond. I am a new artist. I’ve been seriously painting for almost 2 years. I have about 6 works I can show, with more on the way. It’s great to see Steve’s Work on here! Though wish the interview were longer…I know Steve, he has ALOT more to say about art and culture. His Sculpture has to be seen in person to really be appreciated. Solar Culture is an artistically amazing, spiritual, culturally enriching place.
