Sophia by Daniel Mirante
painting: ‘Sophia’ by Daniel Mirante. Oil on canvas. 30×30 inches. 2008

Eve, the mother of all life,
the emanation of Sophia,
lover of serpents.

The serpent penetrates the apple,
and the glorious Eve eats of the fruit of life.
She is the Full Moon resplendent
and the glory of the Sun.
She is Earth’s dark cavern
whose darkness brings forth life.

Cast forth from the garden
by the jealous archon,
she wanders the earth, trying
to find another garden.
But all the while it is in her heart.

Lilith in her tree of crystal
whispers to Eve of secret pleasures.
They laugh together down by the river
when Adam is out of earshot.
He still believes that story about the rib.

Eve laughs to herself as the serpent
comes slithering across the green grass.
Sophia, the serpent of knowledge,
comes to her daughter, teaching her the mysteries.

Her sons, the first Rivals,
struggle together in the dust.
Abel has gone down into the underworld
to retrieve the knowledge of the depths.
Cain has gone forth into the wilderness.
He is become a smith, wresting secrets from the earth.

And Seth, the last-born, the Youngest Son.
He shall learn the mysteries of Sophia.
He goes to the mountain to hear the voice of the wind.
He goes to the sea to hear the voice of the waters.
He goes into deep caverns to hear the voice of the earth.
The face of Lilith gazes upon him from the Moon,
And a fire is kindled in his heart.
