This is an excellent article, i especially like the attention given to drawing. Oil paints tend to dominate attention in visionary art when there is much skill and beauty in other mediums also. If i have one criticism it is that the writer does not pay more attention to the visionary tradition in sculpture, glass carving and jewelery.

Caruana is a pioneer indeed.

This is but a simple synoptical overview of the subject, with referencing consequently balanced against readability, and indebtedness to the First Manifesto clearly acknowledged in the footnotes.

The question is how to push forward the scope of writings about visionary art - can we find a synthesis between the writings of Aldous Huxley, Carl Jung, Herman Hesse, and Caruana? The spirit of collaboration that runs through the visionary culture makes new perspectives and new paradigms ever possible, and with the support of Lila we may one day have a comprehensive compendium of wiritngs.

Small steps, onwards and upwards.

Hi
I agree there is a strong influence, and that Laurence Caruana's influence will be found in a lot of the writings about visionary art to come!
I agree also that it 'would be very good' to see Lila move toward MLA style academic level citation. This piece is one of the first on Lila to employ a hypertext bibliography - a step in the right direction.
Unfortunately it is very difficult at times to vouch every article for the authors' impeccability in citation, and edit for MLA standards, particularly as Lila is not a profit making project and does not employ any paid staff for this kind of detailed work. But I do set it as a hope that the project could attain this quality in the future. For now I ask for patience and forgiveness for any editorial slips.
Thanks

This work, whilst a good read, is heavily indebted to L.Caruana's work. Quoted material should be cited. It would be very good to see this site and those like it move toward more professionalism!

Fascinating and sublime. I keep coming back to read and re-read this essay, savouring each word - thank you Rob Percival!

One small point: it's true the UK lags behind in the Visionary field, for many reasons. Would anyone like to join me in rebalancing that by helping to start a UK/Ireland-based visionary collective?

Small steps to greater visions...
